How to clean up vomit from carpet? Vomit is one of the most challenging things that you will ever have to clean up from carpeting or upholstery. Luckily, it is impossible to clean up; you need the right materials and the right mindset to get it done.
How to Clean Vomit from Carpet
The ‘standard’ method for dealing with vomit is by using baking soda. Now, assuming a person or animal has bolus or vomit all over the carpet, but you don’t have time to clean immediately, what can you do when the vomit has already dried?
First thing’s first: put on a pair of gloves. You need to put on gloves even if the vomit is from your beloved pet or a family member. Vomit might contain pathogens, and there’s stomach acid there, too. These are things that you don’t want anywhere near your skin in any case. When you have your gloves on, use a spoon to begin removing vomit from the carpet.
Be gentle with the fibers as we don’t want to rip out any portion of the carpeting while removing most of the vomit manually. If you can’t stand the smell or if vomit somewhat stings, put on some goggles and a gas mask to prevent vapors from irritating you.
Be sure to put all of the vomit that you collect in a trash bag.
Ideally, the trash bag should be placed in a garbage can, so nothing oozes out of it. You might spread the vomit elsewhere on the carpet. After removing most of the vomit from the carpet, secure the garbage bag, and throw it away.
How to get vomit out of carpet without baking soda?
You can begin cleaning vomit out of carpeting by combining water and white vinegar (or apple cider vinegar), or if this isn’t around, get some hydrogen peroxide. Feel free to eyeball the quantity.
Hydrogen peroxide is particularly effective in removing stains, and it bubbles a lot, too, once it is activated. You must select just one cleaning agent. Do not, under any circumstance, combine both cleaning agents. The solution will form a
harmful gas.
Spray the solution liberally over the entire affected area. How do you know that you should keep spraying? Check the area for dampness. Any area that even has the smallest amount of dampness should be sprayed thoroughly by the cleaning solution.
After the solution has been spread out well enough, get plenty of paper towels, and blot the affected area. After the first few manual attempts to blot the affected area, perform one last blotting with a thick pile of paper towels and a weight (like books). The extra pressure from the books will cause moisture from underneath the fibers to rise to the surface.
Whenever the paper towels are saturated with moisture or vomit, remove and replace quickly with more paper towels. Keep doing this until your paper towels return virtually dry. There would still be some moisture left, but the smell will be very controlled and minimal.

Baking soda is considered a fine cleaning agent if you can’t get to cleaning out the vomit immediately. First, you need to apply a large quantity of baking soda over the entire affected area. Baking soda is cheap, so you won’t have to worry about cleaning your carpet this way. If you cannot immediately clean the vomit, be sure to cover the affected area with an old towel or even an old t-shirt that you don’t need anymore.
The baking soda will help remove most of the moisture. If you ended up covering the vomit for a few hours, make sure you wash the towel or shirt immediately so it won’t stick. Looking at your carpet now, you see large clumps of vomit and baking soda—what a mess.
What can you do now? Two things: you can either use a broom to sweep off the dried clumps, or you can use a vacuum cleaner. Using a vacuum cleaner, wet-vacuuming the area will remove leftover clumps and much of the liquid that has gone down to the carpet’s backing level.
The baking soda would have prevented much of the nasty spoilage that would make your carpet unusable.

If you still want to use baking soda, we recommend using it as an activator of the vinegar. Add three to four tablespoons of baking soda to the solution and spray it over the affected surface.
Blot the area efficiently with paper towels. Moisture absorption is number one, and it’s something that we need to do if you want to remove the smell completely.
The smell is going to be problematic, especially if the carpeting is in the bedroom or living room. The smell of vomit also tends to linger around an area for days if you do not properly address the odor’s source. The odor can also spread throughout a large portion of your house. The important lesson here is to never leave vomit unattended for a long time.
