John Boos wood cutting boards

Square Edge Grain Cutting Board with Bun Feet

Ideal for a Variety of Cutting Tasks

The square shape of these Boos Cutting boards make them ideal for chopping, cutting and slicing fruits, vegetables, cheese, breads and more. Alternatively, these boards are great for serving Hors d'oeuvres, sushi, cheese and cookie assortments.

Available in Walnut and Maple Wood

These cutting boards are available in both maple and walnut wood. Maple wood is lighter in color and walnut is a deeper brown hue.

Four 'Bun' Feet Elevate Each Board

These cutting boards feature four elevated 'bun' feet, which lift the cutting board off counter and table tops. This makes these cutting boards comfortable to use. It makes them ideal as serving and hosting pieces.

The History of John Boos & Co

In 1887, Effingham, Illinois blacksmith Conrad Boos used a Sycamore tree placed on three legs while hammering horseshoes. Three years later, a local butcher realized a wooden Boos Block could be used for cutting meat, and had one custom made. By 1911, John Boos & Co was shipping custom butcher blocks from coast to coast. Throughout the 20’s to 40’s, John Boos expanded and added tables and workbenches to their product range, the majority of which went to the war effort during WWII. By the 1940s, John Boos had earned their outstanding reputation for quality and craftsmanship, and their butcher blocks were found in every restaurant, food store and butcher shop in America. Today, the traditional craftsmen work ethic is still alive and well at John Boos, where all boards and butcher blocks are still proudly manufactured in Effingham, Illinois. Often imitated, John Boos boards and blocks are favorites of professional chefs and can be found in restaurants and commercial settings worldwide.

Committed to Environmental Integrity

John Boos’ Hardwood foresters follow professional best practices that mirror natural forces. Individual trees are selected for harvest, encouraging forests to renew and regenerate themselves naturally and prolifically. John Boos & Co. recycles 95% of all raw lumber scraps and sawdust which are used to generate electricity and create steam to fuel the boilers. John Boos sawdust is also recycled as livestock bedding for local agricultural needs.

John Boos Mystery Oil

Care and Maintenance

Keeping Your Board Sanitized: Wash your John Boos cutting board with hot soapy water after each use and dry with a clean towel or let it air dry. For further sanitation, the board can be rinsed with a vinegar or chlorine bleach solution. (1 teaspoon bleach to one quart of water/5-to-1 ratio of vinegar to water) Do not soak the board in water, this will damage the wood. Like all natural wood cutting boards, John Boos boards are not intended for the dishwasher.

Maintaining Your Board:

Oil your cutting board on all surfaces every 3-4 weeks to maintain the original Boos block cream finish with beeswax. This quick task will protect and prolong the board’s life and ensure it is enjoyed for decades to come. John Boos recommends using John Boos Mystery Oil and/or John Boos Block Cream. (Sold separately on Amazon.)

John Boos Mystery Oil and Butcher Block Cream: Recommended for use with all John Boos wood products

Product Description

John Boos products are designed to meet the demanding expectations of commercial kitchens, and exceed the highest level of quality and food safety standards. Each board and block is made from sustainably harvested North American hardwoods, and offers a commercial grade cutting surface that protects the sharp edge on fine cutlery. Often imitated, John Boos and Co. is internationally known for its expertise in crafting American hardwoods into products of beauty, durability and function.

Simple board care can ensure this heirloom, handcrafted board is a favorite in your kitchen for years to come. Every John Boos Board and Block comes with a food safe natural oil finish that helps protect the wood during transit. Once a month, apply an even coat of NSF Approved John Boos Mystery Oil (sold separately), and allow it to soak in overnight. Repeat this process more often when the board is brand new and “thirsty,” or if you live in a dry, arid climate. John Boos recommends applying John Boos Board Cream (also sold separately) to seal the top of the wood surface after applying the Mystery Oil. A few quick minutes of regular oil application will ensure your new board is properly seasoned, and ready for work! After use, wash board with warm, soapy water (all wooden cutting boards are not dishwasher safe and should not be soaked in water).

Since 1887, every genuine John Boos cutting board and butcher block has been proudly made in Effingham, Illinois by skilled craftspeople using time honored techniques. Today, USA made John Boos cutting boards and butcher blocks are used and loved in commercial and home kitchens worldwide.

Great cutting board for small kitchens
5 Stars
Great cutting board for small kitchens
This 12 inch cutting board is great for making meals for two. I actually own the larger, 18" x 12" x 2.25" board as well but having since moved to a smaller apartment with less counter space, the large board took up too much space in my kitchen to be used for making two person meals on a daily basis. I bought the 12" board and couldn't be happier with the size. It's perfectly square and comes with four feet that protect the bottom of the board from water and food juices, a feature I really love about the board. I chose to go with a Boos block because they're made from maple, a softer wood that is easy on knives and tends not to dull knives as quickly as bamboo and plastic cutting boards. If you have a set of high quality knives I would definitely go with a maple cutting board to extend the lifespan of your knives. The board will show knife marks over time and use, but I find this fairly normal since the wood is softer than bamboo. I've uploaded photos comparing the 12 inch square maple cutting board to the larger 18x12 Boos block I also own for size reference.Cleaning:One thing I do recommend for cleaning the board is to use a wet paper towel and wipe down the board after you're done using it instead of throwing it into the sink and running it under water. I have never run it directly under water or used dish detergent on the board, since the wood can soak up the chemicals from the dish detergent. I noticed that when cutting green onions or any herb, the smell will tend to "soak" into the board. When this happens I take some slices of lemon and sprinkle some coarse salt over the board and rub it in a few times with the lemon/ salt scrub mixture. I let it sit for about 5 minutes and then wipe it off. The lemon helps neutralize the odors and keep new food from picking up the odor.Care:I bought the Boo's mystery oil and the bee's wax to condition the board and use the oil once the board starts looking a bit dry (about one to two times a week). You'll notice the board is dry when it begins to look white and no longer the rich wood color on top. I use the bees wax about twice a month to keep the waxy layer on the board and that really helps with preventing water from being soaked into the board. I've had this cutting board now for over a year use it on a daily basis, and haven't had any problems with it. This is my second Boo's block cutting board and I really love the quality of these boards. I've had all kinds of boards from plastic to bamboo and had various bamboo boards break in half, but haven't encountered any issues with the Boo's block! Just be sure to take good care of the board, these boards do require more care than the typical cutting board but I think it's worth it considering how long they last.
